Sergio Aguero nearly scores stunning solo goal but tackled by Edin Dzeko (Wigan 0 – Man City 1)

In the final 10 minutes at the DW Stadium on Monday night, Premier League leaders Manchester City had no less than seven defensive players on the pitch as Roberto Mancini looked to hold on to the 1-0 win.

Much like Manchester City’s defeat at Sunderland, they should have been in a comfortable lead long before the end and one of the most culpable players was Sergio Aguero who has enjoyed a hugely impressive first season in English football.

Midway through the second half, Diego Maradona’s son-in-law embarked on a mazy dribble reminiscent of Ricky Villa’s goal against Manchester City in the 1981 FA Cup final.

Aguero danced around three Wigan defenders in the tightest of spaces before Edin Dzeko hit a weak shot with the Argentine striker closing in on the finish.

In effect both City strikers had put each other off with Aguero in disbelief that his solo wonder goal had been denied by Dzeko. Meanwhile, on the touchline Roberto Mancini was not a happy bunny.

Footage of Sergio Aguero’s excellent solo run and tackle from Edin Dzeko is here.
